Associate - Marine, Trading & Commodities - Bristol - 1-4 Years' PQE

Salary: £55,000 to £75,000 (dependent on experience)
A leading international law firm is seeking an Associate (1-4 years' PQE) to join its Marine, Trading & Commodities team in Bristol. This is an excellent opportunity to work on a broad range of domestic and international shipping and trade related disputes, acting for major insurers, P&I Clubs, shipowners, charterers and other key maritime stakeholders. The team is known for its technical excellence, commercial approach and strong global presence.
The Team
The Marine, Trading & Commodities group handles a comprehensive range of shipping and trade related disputes, including:
- Collisions and unsafe port claims
- Employers' liability and public liability matters
- Goods in transit disputes
- Marine casualties and property recovery actions
- Occupational disease claims and fatal accidents
- HSE and MCA investigations
The team acts for shipowners, charterers, traders, underwriters, marine insurers, reinsurers, shipyards, port and terminal operators and other maritime clients across multiple jurisdictions.
The Role
You will manage a varied caseload spanning wet shipping disputes and marine liability claims, including:
- Litigated and pre litigated matters from small claims to complex multi track litigation
- Injury and non injury marine claims
- Collision and admiralty matters
- Employers' liability, public liability and catastrophic injury claims arising from marine incidents
- Occupational disease and recovery actions
- Marine casualty investigations, inquests and regulatory matters
You will work closely with insurers, P&I Clubs, shipowners, operators, brokers and other industry stakeholders, gaining exposure to technically challenging, high value and often international matters.
Key Responsibilities
- Managing a varied caseload of wet shipping and marine liability disputes
- Handling litigated and pre litigated matters across a range of complexity
- Advising insurers, P&I Clubs and maritime clients on liability, quantum and coverage
- Assisting with casualty investigations, inquests and regulatory matters
- Supporting partners on multi jurisdictional marine insurance disputes
- Engaging with experts, witnesses and counsel to develop case strategy
- Contributing to business development and maintaining strong client relationships
Candidate Requirements
- Qualified Solicitor (England & Wales or equivalent)
- 1-4 years' PQE
- Experience handling catastrophic injury, large loss personal injury, EL/PL or related claims
- Experience managing litigated and pre litigated matters across varied values
- Exposure to marine liability, shipping, transport or insurance disputes (advantageous)
- Experience with recovery actions, occupational disease claims, inquests or casualty matters (beneficial)
- Strong technical and analytical skills with excellent attention to detail
- Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast paced environment
- Excellent communication, client management and stakeholder engagement skills
- Collaborative approach and enthusiasm for developing a career in the maritime sector
