Why Lawyers Are Choosing Thames Valley Over London

For the fourth year running, Oxford and Reading have topped PwC’s Good Growth for Cities index, with Southampton close behind. This ranking measures economic well-being across 42 UK cities based on factors like jobs, health, income, skills, work-life balance, housing affordability and business growth.

As someone who practised law in the Thames Valley for 12 years, I know first-hand the appeal of this region, historic towns, excellent schools and beautiful countryside. But beyond lifestyle, the numbers speak for themselves.

London vs Thames Valley: Salary and Cost of Living

London salaries are undeniably higher. For example:

  • NQ solicitors in Thames Valley: £50,000+ (top end)
  • Senior Associates in London: £100,000+ vs £60,000–£80,000 regionally

However, cost of living in London is 30–35% higher than Oxford or Reading. Surveys show £5,000 in London equals £3,860 in Oxford. Factor in commuting costs, housing and school fees, and the gap narrows significantly.

Regional Growth and Opportunities

Despite Brexit uncertainty, the Thames Valley is predicted to lead UK economic growth. According to the UK PowerHouse Study, Milton Keynes, Reading, and Oxford will see annual growth of around 2% in 2020. Law firms are responding:

  • Reading: Major firms expanding regional offices
  • Oxford: Growth from Penningtons Manches Cooper, Freeths, Knights Plc, Winckworth Sherwood, and Taylor Vinters (new office focusing on venture funding, IP, and tech)

Why Consider a Move?

  • Lower living costs and better work-life balance
  • Strong regional economy and career progression opportunities
  • Access to top-tier law firms without the London commute
