Working in Legal

With half term just around the corner and families flocking to Devon for a getaway, could this be the perfect moment to think about making it your permanent home?

Devon has long been celebrated as one of the best places to live in England, offering an enviable quality of life. Whether you're drawn to its breathtaking coastlines, stunning countryside, vibrant cities, or crucially its thriving legal market offering fantastic career opportunities, now is an excellent time to consider making the move.

As someone who was born and raised in Devon, I’ve always been passionate about my home county. Those who follow me on LinkedIn will vouch for that!

Why Relocate to Devon as a Lawyer?

1. Thriving legal market

Devon’s legal sector is booming, with opportunities across top firms such as Foot Anstey, Trowers & Hamlins, Womble Bond Dickinson, Ashfords, Tozers to name a few. Whether you're looking for a role in corporate law, banking and finance, litigation, or employment law, Devon offers a diverse range of career paths without compromising on the quality of work.

Back to the Covid times and ongoing, many clients realised that where your lawyers are based makes no difference to business. Many corporate clients have explored instructing law firms with lower fee rates which can be achieved with lower cost bases outside London or other major cities. All experienced and talented lawyers do not want to live in major urban areas, and Devon is certainly the proof of that! Gone are the days when you could only get a solicitor role in residential conveyancing or family law in Devon. Corporate, banking, litigation, property and development roles are readily available.

2. Competitive salaries & work-life balance

Regional salaries have seen a significant increase, with firms recognising the value of attracting top talent. Hybrid and flexible working arrangements are now widely accepted, making it easier than ever to enjoy Devon’s lifestyle while maintaining a fulfilling career. Imagine logging off at 5pm and being at the beach within 30 minutes?

3. Education & schools

Devon boasts some of the best-performing schools in the UK, with several ranking highly in national league tables. Colyton Grammar School, for instance, has consistently been rated as one of the top state schools, with exceptional results and a strong focus on academic excellence. Additionally, Exeter School and Blundell’s School offer prestigious independent education, attracting families from across the country. With a variety of top-rated primary, secondary, and further education options, Devon provides an outstanding environment for families looking to relocate.

4. Property market & affordability

In the last few months Devon has seen a 12% increase in house prices, making it one of the fastest-rising markets in England. With mortgage rates stabilising and market activity rising, now could be an astute time to make the move. Whether you’re looking to live near the beach on Devon’s stunning coastline or in its peaceful countryside, the region offers the perfect blend of outdoor adventure and rural serenity, making it an ideal place to put down roots.

5. Infrastructure & connectivity

Despite its southern location, Devon is impressively well-connected, making travel seamless for both professionals and families. Major train routes pass through Exeter, offering direct access to London, Manchester, and beyond, with the Plymouth to London rail journey often hailed as one of the most scenic in the country. Exeter Airport provides flights to popular destinations such as Spain, Greece, and Turkey, while Bristol Airport, one of the UK’s fastest-growing airports, is just a short journey away.

6. Food, culture & entertainment

Devon is a haven for food lovers, culture enthusiasts, and those seeking vibrant entertainment. The county is renowned for its farm-to-table dining, with fresh seafood, locally sourced produce, and the famous Devon Cream Tea being staples of the region. Cream first of course! Michelin-starred restaurants like Gidleigh Park and Lympstone Manor offer world-class dining experiences. The Devon County Show is a major annual event celebrating rural life, showcasing local food, crafts, and entertainment. Whether you're interested in fine dining, exploring historic theatres, or attending lively food festivals, Devon offers a rich and diverse cultural scene.

7. Outdoor adventures & sports

Devon’s two National Parks -Dartmoor and Exmoor - offer stunning landscapes for hiking, cycling, and wildlife spotting. The county is also home to Exeter Chiefs Rugby Club, Exeter City Football Club, and world-class golf courses like Bovey Castle.

If water sports are more your style, Devon’s coastline is perfect for sailing, surfing, and paddleboarding. Hands down, my favourite part of living here are the amazing beaches. In the north Woolacombe Beach is consistently ranked among the best in the country, stretches for miles and is a mini paradise for surfers and families alike. Down south Bantham Beach, with its stunning views of Burgh Island, is perfect for water sports and coastal walks. Another favourite of mine is Blackpool Sands with its fantastic café.
