Kate Sinclair and an Associate talking about her career move in Birmingham

Harjyoti Jhall worked with Chadwick Nott Senior Associate Kate Sinclair to find her ideal role. We asked for her insight into the recruitment process.

I graduated from the University of Birmingham in 2013 with a 2.1 in a joint honours degree in Law with French. I spent one year studying French Law at Universite Paris II (Assas) as part of my degree. I went on to do the LL.M LPC at the University of Law, qualifying with a distinction. I then gained work as a paralegal for one year before securing my training contract. Since qualification, I have joined the specialist real estate services team at Gowling WLG as an Associate which I got through consultation with Chadwick Nott.

What made you decide to make the move to a new firm?

I had not really thought about moving firms until Kate at Chadwick Nott contacted me about potential vacancies in the area of law I was interested to qualify in. Having worked in my existing firm for three years and being approximately 6 months or so from qualification, it seemed like the ideal juncture in my career to consider a change.

Why did you work with a recruitment agency?

I felt a recruiter, like Kate, would be better placed to know the legal market and be able to offer a range of vacancies that I may not have found myself.

How important was location to your job hunt?

Location was quite an important factor in my decision at the time. I have been in Birmingham for the past 9 years with strong roots in the city and I have come to know it quite well.

What do you like about Birmingham?

Birmingham is a diverse city that is consistently growing. In the time that I have been here, the city's landscape has vastly changed with infinitely more office space and opportunity. There is always something new to do: new bars, new restaurants, shopping facilities, even cycle lanes. I like the balance of the hustle and bustle of the city, but equally enjoy being able to travel a short distance to the quieter suburbs where there are nice parks and green spaces. Birmingham is living up to its name as the Second City. For anyone new considering a move to Birmingham, I don't think they will be disappointed. There is something for everyone here - just speak to Kate and her team to find out more.

How was the recruitment process with Chadwick Nott?

My experience was positive. Kate had a personal approach and genuinely cared about my progression. She was with me every step of the way, providing sound advice and encouragement when I needed it. She was able to provide tips for my interviews based on her experience and understanding of the culture of each of the law firms, but more importantly, she made a conscious effort to match me to the firm that I would fit in best. I am still in touch with Kate and ever grateful for the opportunity and support she gave me.

What first attracted you to your new firm?

Throughout my career, I always felt Gowling was a firm that I knew I wanted to work for but never believed I could. Gowling has a reputation that precedes itself. When I researched my current role and the people I would be working with, I knew quite quickly that this is somewhere I wanted to work and where I could see myself fit in. Gowling's recruitment process is extremely professional compared to some other firms and I made a point of contacting the relevant individual in HR to thank her and tell her what a difference it made.

Gowling got everything right, from its interview process to its offices, offer packs, arranging a meet-up with a member of the team at a similar level to discuss the work culture and supporting my transition from a small firm to a huge global firm. Kate was on hand at all times, working closely with the Gowling team to get me on board. So far, Gowling has exceeded my expectations.

You’ve been at your new firm for a year now, how has it been?

I have had a great first year – my team and colleagues are approachable and always make time for me, and the firm has given me the warmest welcome. I joined close to Christmas in 2017 and it was just the perfect time with all the festivities of the carol service, the Christmas parties and lunches, it was a really great atmosphere. The work is challenging and varied and I am well supported in my team. People at Gowling work very hard but there is also a good work-life balance. I have made many friends at work and regularly play sports, including football and badminton, which is something I had not done for years since school!
