Senior Legal Cashier

Location: Bedford (3 days in the office, 2 from home)

Hours: Monday - Friday, 9.00am - 5.30pm

Salary: £27,000 - £35,000

This is a newly created position within a growing finance team of 5. The firm is looking for an experienced legal cashier who can handle day‑to‑day cashiering work confidently, maintain strong compliance with the SRA Accounts Rules, and provide cover for telegraphic transfers (T/Ts) and payroll when needed.

Key responsibilities

  • Posting receipts, payments, transfers and disbursements to client and office ledgers
  • Daily banking tasks including reconciliations, cheque handling and allocating funds
  • Ensuring correct separation of client and office money
  • Processing refunds, write‑offs and adjustments
  • Handling ledger queries from fee earners
  • Supporting internal and external audit requirements
  • Processing T/Ts, including high‑value completions and compliance checks
  • Providing payroll cover when required
  • Assisting with month‑end tasks, reconciliations and financial reporting
  • Using legal accounts systems (e.g., P4W) and helping improve processes where possible

Person specification

  • At least 3 years' experience as a legal cashier in a law firm
  • Strong understanding of the SRA Accounts Rules
  • Confident with daily cashiering duties, postings and reconciliations
  • Experience handling T/Ts
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Good Excel skills and experience with legal accounts software
  • Basic payroll knowledge (desirable)
  • Experience in high‑volume conveyancing or completion environments (desirable)
  • Familiarity with online banking platforms and digital approval workflows (desirable)
  • Reliable, organised and able to prioritise
  • Strong communicator with a proactive approach
  • High integrity and a commitment to accurate, compliant financial work
  • Able to work well both independently and as part of a team
