The Lawyer’s “In-house Counsel as Business Partner” conference goes off without a hitch

In-house consultants Brian Littleton and Grant Jackson attended The Lawyer's annual in-house conference.

Brian Littleton and Grant Jackson of Chadwick Nott’s in-house recruitment team attended The Lawyer’s annual “In-House Counsel as Business Partner” conference at the lovely Hilton Tower Bridge Hotel earlier this week. As a Networking Sponsor, Chadwick Nott was on hand to provide consultative career and recruitment advice and to expand its already substantial network with over 150 of the UK’s most senior lawyers from a cross-section of industries in attendance.

Over the course of the two days attendees, majority either General Counsel or Head of Legal, were treated to a host of topics relevant to their work. These ranged from legal strategy and the role of lawyers on executive boards. Of particular interest to many was a presentation by Bayer’s Head of Legal, Mark Wilkinson, on what real business partnering looks like from a legal perspective. Attendees were able to participate in various round table discussions covering topics like the impact of BREXIT, Cyber & Regulatory Risks and the grey areas of GDPR to name a few.

“The event had the perfect balance of excellent speakers, round table discussions, interactive feedback and refreshment breaks for networking,” Brian commented. One of the day’s highlights was a panel discussion around the race to attract, motivate and retain in-house talent. The panelists included the Heads of Legal from GSK, Sage, Simply Business, BT and PGI. “From a recruiters perspective it was fascinating to hear what these in-house counsel considered to be of value and what strategies they had implemented to bring on and keep the best legal talent in their teams,” said Grant. Other panelists included Heads of Legal and General Counsel from Starbucks, Barclays, Vodaphone, IKEA, GE Aviation, Mercedes Benz, Southampton FC, Bayer, Bupa and many more.

The event was thoroughly entertaining and audience members were able to participate in real time ‘live polls’ and pose questions during the sessions over their mobile phones directly to the speakers—adding to the convivial atmosphere. Between sessions there was much lively discussion about the content and outcomes raised from the presentations and panel forums.

The Chadwick Nott team is already looking forward to the 2019 conference.
