Simon Chadwick, founder of Chadwick Nott and Chris Bull of Edge International Consultancy explore current paralegal trends, in particular the increase in diversity of roles available to paralegals. Some promising findings are discovered and the future for paralegals is looking brighter than ever.
During current tough economic times, some firms have chosen to opt for a team of paralegals over entire qualified teams to lower their costs, meaning paralegals often remain in roles longer than before. Once they are paid closer to what they feel they are worth, they are more likely to commit to a firm in the long run.
If the pressure for law firms to re-structure continues , the need for paralegals will increase further and it seems unlikely that this demand will decrease back to its former level.
In the UK and overseas, Legal Process Outsourcing firms (LPOs) are becoming more prominent and have presented paralegals with new opportunities and opened doors for law graduates which might not have been available to them otherwise.
